Frequently Asked Questions

How did Niqhtwing Start?

Paul:

I was doing studio work in Los Angeles and the town was driving me crazy! So I got some guys together, signed with an agency, and went on the road.

What about L.A. was driving you crazy?

Paul:

The music attitude of the town.., that a group that is out on a major label is what you better be like... or you are not happening. (Does the word clone come to mind?). The truth became more evident a few years later, instead of clone the term is cookie-cutter music; also the town was moving away from  hard rock music and more towards pop.

Did you tour a lot when you left L.A.?

Paul:

Yes. We played through the Pacific north west and back to L.A time after time. We stayed on the road for a year and a half. I believe that is why we are a strong live band now.

So why a female singer?

Paul:

We did not wnt to re-do the 80's, so we looked for a singer who had the power to sing metal with a clear, distinct voice, like Metallica.  This was not an easy task.  For a long time we asked ourselves : Is there anyone out there?  We got more than we asked for in Dee.  We did not think that any girl would have the power, the  poise and the octave range to not only handle metal but expand the genre. The reason we picked a female was to expand the metal genre.

What is it like recording in Deep Purple's studio?

Paul:

Well, first of all, it isn't their studio as far as ownership goes, but they have done things to the studio like new playback speakers, signing the door to the studio,... oops!, that isn't that important... The actual owner is Greg Rike and I challenge you to meet a nicer person.

So, how did you meet Deep Purple?

Paul:

Roger Glover, forever the gentleman. He is a great lover of music, Deep Purple, the business, production, all of it. He lives it. We met in L.A., and became friends. Ritchie and I also became friends and he suggested Rike Productions for us.

What about Criteria Studios?

Paul:

We knew that the Judas Priest Live video and album were done there so we chose them as our post production facility. The bonus of Criteria is that they have great engineers.

So why Miami?

Paul:

That is a good question. Like I said earlier, we came down to finish Thunderzone, we stayed because we just liked it. It is multicultural, it is relaxed, there is a variety of things to do, the models at South Beach are awesome, and there are  women from all over the world.  Another aspect was Yngwie Malmsteen , we had no idea he lived here when we first came down, we found out at the hit factory when his engineer, Keith Rose< was available for our post production.

What about the internet?

Paul:

We think it's great for Artists.   We can get feedback from people we would have never heard from in the past.   Plus people can hear our music for free with visuals -- and for us everyone will know where we are playing.

What is the second album like?, What's its name?

Paul:

We are working on the second CD now.

It is a combination of metal rock and techno dance. We have always thought that the driving rhythm of dance music and the power of hard rock had a common ground, hence the inevitable blend of these two genres.  Of course we will follow our romantic heavy metal roots.

Why is Nightwing described as a UNIQUE SOUND?

Paul:

We didn't let ourselves get stuck on one genre.   We also avoided the trend highway.  We concentrated on what we did well, even if it wasn't popular.  Dee our singer wasn't pushed to sound like someone else.   We all have a unique quality; I mean everyone not just the band, however in a band if you work together to develop that quality I don't think you can help but sound at least somewhat unique.

What does trend band mean?

Paul:

You know Candlebox answers that better than I ever could because they lived, and are living through that experience.* Miami Herald 3/19/99 article in section G. WEEKEND pg. 20 by Leila Cobo-Hanson.  I believe the Record Co.s site www.nightstarmusic.com reproduced that article on their NEWS Site.

What did your success on MP3 change?

Paul:

Everything!! We are still in shock! You know MP3 is the gauntlet of competition with over 20,000 Artists and 100,000 songs and World wide not just local or even country. WHEW!!!

Did two #1 songs have a different effect on the band?

Paul:

Well, after all they are internet hits, and evedn though they show that people like our music the greatest challenge is still ahead.  What it did was to point out our demographic which unfortunately is not America, we got good reviews in America, but we were downloaded in Germany and Japan .  Europe and the rest of the world, other than America, have embraced this band.

Where can I get Thunderzone?

Paul:

Visit our label's site www.nightstarmusic.com

Who do you listen to for your personal music?

Paul:

Well I have a kind of weird process...

Vocals:  The top is GLENN HUGHES the live track of Coast to Coast off the Burning Down Japan CD.
Harmonies:  Little River Band, Novecento out of Milan Italy.
Guitar Solos:  Ritchie Blackmores solo in 'Lay Down Stay Down' / Satrianis solo in 'With Jupiter In Mind' / Les Dudeks solo in 'Deja Vu' / and Gene Ruffalo's solo in 'Loner'

How do you feel about reviews?

Group:

WHEW!!!  Our reviews have been great!  We really appreciate the good ones (of course).  We just believe it's too much opinion.  Who writes a review?  On what basis?  If you like the band! good review;  if you don't! bad!!  The sad thing is it can make or break a lot of artists; that should never happen.  To us it's simple if you don't like someone why the hell are you there?

You also created a new genre? Romantic Heavy Metal.

Group & Dee:

Well, I think Dee should get the credit for that. Dee - "The public and the reviewer's said that about us, I see a woman getting recognized in heavy metal it's great!"
